'Lungs in a box' could increase vital transplants
Briefly

Surgeon Marius Burman stated, "The new XPS system could increase lung transplants by 30%, allowing us to utilize 'borderline' lungs that were previously discarded."
Daniel Evans-Smith, the first patient to receive a double lung transplant using the system, expressed his gratitude, saying he was "immensely grateful" for the opportunity the new technology provided.
NHS medical director Prof Derek Manas highlighted, "There’s mounting evidence this technology can enable more transplants by improving organ function, addressing the severe shortage of lungs."
The new system keeps donated lungs alive outside the body for up to six hours, significantly reconditioning organs deemed unsuitable, according to the hospital's reports.
