Three incarcerated men at Elmwood Jail in Santa Clara County were charged with attempted murder following a violent attack on another inmate. The victim, who was mistaken for a gang member, remains on life support after suffering severe injuries. Witness reports indicate the attack lasted approximately 20 minutes, occurring largely out of the surveillance camera's view. Local authorities are questioning the decision to house potentially dangerous individuals together in a less secure environment, potentially questioning the policies in place at the facility regarding inmate safety and supervision.
"Twenty minutes, on camera, in the full view and public dormitory setting in the jail, again, is an eternity for something like this to occur," Armaline said.
"The attack was well and carefully planned during a transition of folks out of the barracks to lunch," Ellenberg said. "I have been told that the assault began in the bathroom where there are no cameras and continued."
