James Howells, a Welsh computer engineer, is making headlines for his quest to recover a hard drive containing 8,000 bitcoins inadvertently discarded by an ex-girlfriend. Initially valued at $5 million in 2013, the crypto wallet's worth has ballooned to over $779 million. Howells' legal attempts were denied by a Welsh High Court, which cited insufficient grounds for continuation. Despite this setback, he aims to purchase the landfill in South Wales where he believes the hard drive lies, particularly as the site is closing for a solar farm soon.
"I have discussed this option recently with investment partners," Howells told the BBC, "and it is very much on the table as we explore this possibility."
"After so much time passed, the judge found there were no reasonable grounds to continue the case, nor any realistic prospect of success for Howells."
