Saran Coman, affectionately known as Happy, has returned to teach apprentices at the Build East Skills Centre located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. After completing her own apprenticeship in formwork and gaining five years of experience in the construction industry, she now trains emerging carpenters. Saran finds apprenticeships to be invaluable for young people in construction, citing the supportive environment. Inspired by her experience working on the UCL Marshgate building project, she expresses pride in seeing the university, completed last year, now bustling with students. Her return to teaching coincides with National Apprenticeship Week.
An apprenticeship is such a great way to get young people into construction. You get all the support you need and you feel like everyone is behind you.
I worked on one of the new universities that has been built on the park UCL Marshgate. I remember I started in 2019 when the ground was being dug out for the foundations.
