There are additional alerts for yellow and amber warnings across the UK, highlighting risks from flying debris and potential tornadoes. Emergency services are urging people to stay indoors for safety during the storm's passage.
A Met Office spokesman said, "Very strong winds associated with Storm Eowyn causing very dangerous conditions with widespread disruption and significant impacts expected."
European storm forecasters Estofex has issued a level 2 alert on Thursday, warning there is a "risk of a few tornados."
Storm Éowyn will move across the northwest of the UK on Friday, clearing to the northeast on Friday night.
The main tornado risk seems to evolve along and [south] of a Bristol-London line.
