Around 60,000 people protested in Brussels following the formation of the new Belgian government, opposing significant cuts impacting pensions, unemployment benefits, and hospital funding. Led by Bart de Wever, the coalition government has proposed raising the retirement age and introducing caps on unemployment benefits, sparking concerns among various groups, including young military personnel facing changes to their pension conditions. Protesters argue these austerity measures threaten public services and diminish the purchasing power of vulnerable populations, particularly pensioners.
This is a real attack on the purchasing power of pensioners, because they will have to work longer to get a smaller pension, said Thierry Bodson.
We have a special calculation for our pensions, and now they want to take it away... now, during the game, they're changing those conditions, said David.
