I began to question and rethink that maybe the way I felt about brown people was not what I thought but just an influence of the racist rhetoric about brown people.
Much of the feeling of undesirability came from South Asians around me, who, whenever I tanned even slightly, would say, 'You were so fair,' or 'What happened to your skin?'
Products like sunscreen became a threat rather than a form of protection. I even bought a tube of Fair and Lovely, a skin-lightening cream, when I was 13.
I am finally beautiful-well, beautiful for as long as the trend exists, right?
