A new California street safety law will soon take effect, prohibiting parking within 20 feet of crosswalks to enhance visibility and reduce crashes involving pedestrians and vehicles.
Supporters of the new law argue that by ensuring drivers have a clearer view of upcoming intersections, it helps to prevent severe accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, and cars, ultimately promoting safer roadways.
City officials acknowledge the challenge ahead, as many intersections lack the necessary signage or curb markings to clearly indicate where parking is forbidden. It may take years to implement these changes.
During an initial enforcement period, Berkeley will issue warnings for parking violations from January to March 2025, before commencing the issuance of $64 tickets starting April 1.
