Massachusetts aims to construct at least 222,000 housing units from 2025 to 2035 to remain competitive and reduce costs. The Healey-Driscoll Administration's statewide housing plan highlights the challenges ahead, including high interest rates, construction costs, and local limitations. Despite an average of 19,000 units being added annually from 2010 to 2020, activity has slowed significantly, with only 11,600 permits issued in 2023. Failure to meet housing targets could escalate prices and homelessness, driving residents out of the state, according to housing officials.
It's going to be hard. Very often in life, the things that are most worth doing are difficult, and I guess this is one of them.
If the state does not meet its target, housing prices and homelessness will increase and more people will move out of the state.
