One of London's oldest thatched roofs is being restored on a 15th-century tithe barn
Briefly

The Upminster Tithe Barn, dating back to the 15th century, is undergoing a substantial restoration to replace its worn thatched roof. This project involves a team of master thatchers and apprentices working through winter to secure the barn, which has remained largely unchanged since its construction during England's Great Slump. The restoration is funded by £650,000 from the National Highways heritage fund and a grant from Historic England. The project will employ around 11,000 bundles of reed and feature decorative straw boxing hares, blending historical preservation with craftsmanship.

This restoration not only preserves the barn’s historical significance but also ensures its future usability after a year of preparation and teamwork among master thatchers.
