During the TechCrunch-hosted Disrupt 2024 conference, Perplexity CEO Arvind Srinivas appeared baffled when asked to define plagiarism, highlighting his company’s struggles amidst ongoing allegations.
The CEO claimed that Perplexity 'always cites its sources' and 'doesn’t make any ownership claims to the content it shows users,' contradicting accusations from major news outlets.
Srinivas suggested that Perplexity's process is akin to how journalists and academics summarize content, pointing to their practice of sourcing information, which critics dispute.
Despite his efforts to clarify, Srinivas's explanations did not alleviate concerns raised by news organizations, including a cease and desist letter from the New York Times.
