PETA activists staged a protest outside the ASPCA's Manhattan office, attempting to dump a truckload of manure to highlight what they deem as the ASPCA's misleading humane certification labels. However, frigid weather rendered much of the manure frozen, complicating their stunt. Some protesters resorted to shoveling out the manure manually. PETA claims that the ASPCA's certification deceives consumers about the treatment of animals in factories, a message they have been advocating for months.
Protesters with PETA hauled the estimated ton of waste through Midtown with the intention of dropping the load smack dab in the middle of Eighth Avenue near West 37th Street before noon.
PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, targeted the ASPCA on Thursday as part of its recent campaign accusing its rival of promoting 'sham' humane certification labels on meat, eggs and dairy.
'They would have dumped the entire truckload,' PETA representative Ashley Byrne told The Post. 'The process was slowed down by the fact that it was so cold the manure was frozen so they got somewhat through.'
