A massive blackout hit Puerto Rico early Tuesday morning, leaving nearly 90% of Luma Energy's 1.47 million customers without power due to a failure of an underground cable.
Luma Energy announced that fully restoring power could take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours and would proceed in phases, prioritizing essential services like the Municipal Hospital of San Juan.
Puerto Rico's governor, Pedro Pierluisi, has demanded answers from the two power companies involved and urged them to expedite the restoration process and keep people informed.
Residents are frustrated with the recurring power issues on the island, which have been exacerbated since Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Hurricane Fiona in 2022.
