RAINY DAY PLAN: How to Hike Muir Woods Without the Crowds (Feb. 1-2)
Briefly

Muir Woods visitors often face crowded trails, but the Fern Creek Trail presents a serene alternative. This unmarked 3-mile loop, part of Mount Tamalpais State Park, features stunning natural elements like a rushing creek and vibrant wildflowers. At the trail's highlight is a narrow, moss-covered bridge, providing adventurers a charming touch. With an entrance fee and reservation required, it's a less trodden path that offers a more immersive experience among nature, away from the tourist rush and perfect for those seeking solitude.
"This trail is a hidden gem of adventure with that rugged bridge," Hillary Colyer, Mount Tamalpais State Park interpreter, told SFGATE.
The star of the show is the catwalk bridge supported by a moss-covered redwood log. No wider than a couple of feet, the bridge employs wooden railings over a grated metal walkway.
A less-trotted 3-mile loop includes the Fern Creek, Plevin Cut and Alice Eastwood trails, offering a quieter experience amidst the beautiful nature.
This less-trotted trail is free of crowds and features a rushing creek, wildflowers, and a narrow bridge built over a fallen redwood tree.
