David Yambio, an abuse survivor from Libya, expressed his dismay over Italy's decision to release war crimes suspect Osama Najim, who faced an ICC warrant. Najim's release has left Yambio and other victims feeling unsafe, as many have testified against him for serious crimes committed at Mitiga prison. Despite calls for action against Najim following his repatriation, Italy's interior minister cited concerns over his social danger as the reason for Najim's release. The UN has also urged Libyan authorities to take action, complicating the pursuit of justice.
The fragile hope for justice that we were all holding on to has been crushed, Yambio said in an interview with the Guardian.
Almasri was in Italy, in my backyard – heaven knows if he was looking for me and all those who witnessed his crimes.
I'm struggling to reconcile what has happened. All we have left is our voice and even that is being attacked by people who want to deny our pain.
Najim had been sent back because he presented a profile of social dangerousness.
