Revised building schedule approved for major Romford housing development
Briefly

Havering Council has approved an updated construction schedule for the Waterloo and Queen Street housing development in Romford amid new fire safety regulations. Originally paused in 2023, the redevelopment plan now emphasizes the construction of lower-rise blocks that meet safety standards, enabling the delivery of 109 affordable homes. This adjustment comes after regulations mandated a second staircase for buildings over 18 meters. While the entire project aims for 1,380 homes, the timeline for the final phase's commencement is set for five to seven years in the future.
Cllr Graham Williamson stated, "The original phase one proposals have been paused to ensure alignment with new safety legislation for residential buildings over 18 metres."
Cllr Williamson noted, "In order to mitigate the programme impact, cabinet is asked to endorse bringing forward other lower rise blocks as part of revised phase one, to deliver 109 new affordable homes."
