Seven American students, stranded on Worms Head island due to rapidly incoming tides and harsh conditions from Storm Eowyn, were rescued by RNLI volunteers. The group was cut off during high winds, prompting four rescue trips by lifeboat crew who faced dangerous sea conditions, including two-meter swells. The students expressed gratitude for the rescue, surprised by the volunteers' unpaid dedication. Lifeboat operations manager, Lawrie Grove, urged coastal walkers to check tide times and remain cautious while walking on tidal paths, emphasizing the dangers of being cut off by the tide.
The students were reportedly extremely grateful and said they could not believe all the crew were unpaid volunteers.
This was a challenging rescue, said Jon Tarrant, an RNLI volunteer crew member who rescued the students... The swell was up to two metres.
