Robocallers imitating FCC employees targeted actual FCC staff with fraudulent calls, threatening jail time unless Google gift cards were paid. The FCC confirmed they have no 'Fraud Prevention Team' and emphasized that their staff's personal numbers are confidential. Although the robocallers initiated around 1,800 calls before being terminated, the FCC also announced a substantial fine against Telnyx, the service provider facilitating these calls, for multiple violations.
The FCC's Enforcement Bureau believes the purpose of the calls was to threaten, intimidate, and defraud.
One recipient of an imposter call reported that they were ultimately connected to someone who 'demand[ed] that [they] pay the FCC $1,000 in Google gift cards to avoid jail time.'
