Romania's President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation in response to increasing pressure from far-right opposition parties seeking his impeachment following a controversial election. Iohannis's decision came amid allegations of Russian interference and the unexpected success of a far-right candidate in the elections. As he resigned, set to leave office on February 12, he noted the internal and external crises arising from parliamentary actions against him. This political upheaval has shown the growing influence of extremist parties in Romanian politics, particularly as elections are set to be rerun in May 2023.
"To spare Romania from this crisis, I am resigning as president of Romania," Iohannis said in an emotional address, adding that he will leave office on February 12.
"This whole endeavor will have effects internally and unfortunately also externally," Iohannis said, signaling the broad implications of the political crisis.
"With the two rounds of the election set to be rerun on May 4 and May 18, Romania's top court had said Iohannis would stay on until his successor was elected."
"Several opposition parties sought Iohannis's removal, including the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), signaling a significant shift in the political landscape."
