Michael Noonan, a 16-year-old forward for Shamrock Rovers, made history by becoming the youngest goalscorer in Conference League history during a playoff match against Molde. His winning goal secured a 1-0 victory, making him the second-youngest scorer in European club competitions. Rovers, the first Irish team to reach the knockout stage of a European competition, will host the second leg of the playoff in Dublin. Coach Stephen Bradley praised Noonan’s readiness and talent, emphasizing his dedication to the sport as key attributes for his success.
Rovers coach Stephen Bradley said it was an easy call to insert Noonan into the lineup after having watched the teenager perform well against veteran center backs in training.
At 16 years, 197 days old, Noonan bumped Romelu Lukaku into third after the Belgian striker scored in December of 2009 for Anderlecht against Ajax in the Europa League.
