In 1964, Field was 17 years old, feeling naive and powerless, having graduated from high school with no direction, when she found out she was pregnant.
Fortunately for Field, a family friend, a doctor, knew how she would be able to get an abortion. He drove her to Tijuana, Mexico.
The procedure was done without anesthetic, and the technician administering ether was molesting her as the procedure happened, creating an absolute pit of shame.
Sally Field still feels shame about her abortion experience, reflecting societal attitudes ingrained in her from being raised in the '50s.
