An inquest into the 1992 shooting of four IRA members revealed that lethal force employed by a Specialist Military Unit was unjustified. Coroner Mr Justice Humphreys expressed that the soldiers acted without an honest belief in the necessity of their actions, rejecting claims of a firefight. The men were confirmed as 'on active service' during an attack on a police station, but it was determined that the operation did not adequately minimize lethal force. The findings challenge previous statements that had portrayed the incident as a mutual exchange.
The coroner found the men died as a result of gunshots fired by members of a Specialist Military Unit, a unit within the Army.
Mr Justice Humphreys rejected the soldiers' claims that the IRA members opened fire in the car park, saying they were "demonstrably untrue."
