Schools face further disruption as ESB efforts continue to reconnect 204,000 homes and businesses
Briefly

After Storm Éowyn, over 204,000 customers remain without electricity, and 100,000 could be out for another week, impacting rural areas most. Schools are assessing safety to reopen, with a notable clean-up effort underway. International support is arriving for restoration efforts, and emergency response hubs are being set up to assist those affected. Additionally, Uisce Éireann reported that 84,000 are without water, and further risks exist for others. The ongoing challenges are compounded by another storm, impacting repair speeds and conditions.
Around a dozen schools in the north-west and border counties suffered varying degrees of storm damage last Friday, the majority in rural areas.
Support from Great Britain has been deployed to worst impacted areas, and further support is set to arrive from electricity network operators in Austria, Finland, Netherlands and France.
The National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG) said yesterday that Emergency Response Hubs would be set up in the worst-affected areas to help people with basic needs.
ESB said the vast bulk of customers will have power restored by this Friday, but some 100,000 households face another week without electricity.
