Scores of children raped by fighters in eastern DR Congo, UNICEF says
Briefly

Recent reports indicate a shocking rise in sexual violence against children in eastern DRC, particularly in the North and South Kivu provinces. UNICEF revealed that during late January, 572 rape cases were reported, with children making up nearly a third of the victims. The M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, alongside government forces, are accused of committing these heinous acts amid escalating conflict over mineral-rich territories. The true extent of sexual violence is likely higher due to victims' reluctance to seek help, and health facilities are struggling with a lack of essential medications for survivors.
According to UNICEF, health facilities in the region reported a total of 572 rape cases in the week of during the week from 27 January to 2 February - more than a fivefold week-on-week increase.
It is suspected that all parties to the conflict committed sexual violence. Our partners are running out of the drugs used to reduce the risk of HIV infection after a sexual assault.
