SF family's 'Zodiac Wall' educates visitors about Chinese culture, connects community
Briefly

For over a decade, Nancy Yu Law and her family have created a vibrant display for Lunar New Year in Chinatown, San Francisco. They change the theme every year based on the zodiac sign; this year representing the 'spiritual snake' which symbolizes goodness and effectiveness. The Zodiac Wall features over 1,100 red envelopes and incorporates 160 Chinese surnames, allowing visitors an interactive experience. Law views their portrayal as a vital cultural connection between East and West, emphasizing community pride and the importance of sharing their heritage.
Every year, we change the theme according to the zodiac sign. I hope when the global visitors and also local visitors come here, hopefully we share our culture with them.
This year is the year of the snake. So, in Chinese culture and history we don't just call it year of the snake, we call it year of the spiritual snake.
I really feel proud of my husband and my family, doing this for so many years. Because each envelope was pasted by hand.
