Boom Supersonic has announced its airliner can fly faster than the speed of sound without creating a sonic boom audible from the ground, a significant advancement for commercial aviation. Unlike Concorde, which could only fly supersonic over water, Boom's innovation, known as Boomless Cruise, could allow for domestic supersonic flights. Supported by Elon Musk, who called for regulatory changes, this technology utilizes Mach cutoff physics to prevent sonic booms from disturbing people or damaging structures, potentially reshaping aviation laws and attracting airline customers in the process.
Current regulations prohibit planes from flying supersonic over land due to the risk of sonic booms disturbing people and possibly damaging buildings.
Boomless Cruise is possible thanks to a physics term called Mach cutoff, allowing sound waves to U-turn in the atmosphere before reaching the ground.
