Despite speed being a recognized contributor to road fatalities, details on the impact of deteriorating road surfaces are often hidden. The government must ensure that any speed reduction is accompanied by substantial investment in road maintenance to truly enhance safety.
"It's very hard to get information regarding the contributory causes of road crashes even for the families involved, so that is a concern," Donna Price, of the Irish Road Victims' Association, said.
"There is no point in having a reduced speed if we are not at the same time investing in the maintenance and restoration of our roads to make sure they are safe to travel on," he told RTÉ.
