Speed limit reductions welcomed, but poor condition of local roads must be addressed, campaigners say
Briefly

Road safety advocates assert that the recently lowered speed limits on local roads in Ireland are just an initial measure to address the high rates of accidents, emphasizing the need for better road conditions and transparent data on crash factors. Despite speed being a recognized contributor to road fatalities, details on the impact of deteriorating road surfaces are often hidden. The government must ensure that any speed reduction is accompanied by substantial investment in road maintenance to truly enhance safety.
"It's very hard to get information regarding the contributory causes of road crashes even for the families involved, so that is a concern," Donna Price, of the Irish Road Victims' Association, said.
"There is no point in having a reduced speed if we are not at the same time investing in the maintenance and restoration of our roads to make sure they are safe to travel on," he told RTÉ.
