Protests erupted at a Park Slope Starbucks facing closure, with arrests during a sit-in organized by Workers United. Employees and allies rallied against what they perceive as illegal actions related to the store's recent unionization, which occurred just two months prior. Union organizer allegations emphasized a connection between the closure and the company's treatment of unionized employees. City officials expressed concern about Starbucks' commitment to negotiations with its employees, as the sudden closure leaves workers seeking fair contracts without a viable workplace.
"I 100% believe that unionization was a reason why we're closing," said employee and Sunset Park resident Jenn Skinner... "We literally just unionized two months ago. So it seems very fishy."
City Comptroller Brad Lander said in a statement that he hoped the corporation will "move forward with negotiations." "We expect Starbucks to engage their unionized employees... this hits especially close to home."
