The fall of Goma: 16 days of chaos and fear in pictures
Briefly

In late January, the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo became a focal point of conflict as M23 rebels advanced on the city. People fled from nearby Minova, seeking refuge across Lake Kivu. As the rebels drew closer, residents began to evacuate, with many locking up shops and moving into safer areas. The situation escalated with the expulsion of mercenary troops and increased casualties in local hospitals. The civilian population suffered immensely as they sought shelter and assistance amid the chaos of war.
On January 22, amidst escalating violence, internally displaced individuals fled from Minova across Lake Kivu to Goma, desperately escaping the confrontations between M23 rebels and Congolese forces.
With M23 rebels advancing, many Goma inhabitants, including shopkeepers like Usama Mukulu, began locking their doors as fear increased throughout the city.
By January 29, after M23 captured Goma, mercenary troops allied with the Congolese army were expelled, leaving behind military gear and growing unrest in the streets.
As February began, makeshift shelters emerged with civilians seeking refuge, while hospitals like CBCA Ndosho operated tirelessly treating casualties from the ongoing conflict.
