The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) is alarmed by harassment against the Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA) in Serbia, which is critical for independent accountability journalism. Following the loss of USAID funding, CRTA has faced online targeted attacks and threats against its director, incorrect claims linking her to political unrest, and declining safety. The IFCN condemns these smear campaigns and urges Serbian authorities to protect civil society actors. CRTA has a strong reputation as a nonpartisan entity committed to improving electoral fairness and upholding high standards of fact-checking through its Istinomer project.
The harassments towards CRTA signify a worrying trend that threatens the very foundation of accountability journalism and civil society in Serbia.
Without strong protections and support, independent fact-checking organizations like CRTA may struggle to continue their vital work amidst growing hostilities.
