The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in 1924, originally branded as a Christmas parade to promote holiday shopping, despite occurring on Thanksgiving morning.
Initially, live animals from the Central Park Zoo were the main attractions of the parade, which were later replaced by helium balloons due to children's fears.
The first balloon at the parade was Felix the Cat, but Snoopy has since become the most featured character, appearing in over 40 parades.
Surprisingly, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was suspended from 1942 to 1944 due to World War II, marking the only major interruption in its history.
