Venice is implementing an access fee for tourists starting in 2025, increasing the fee to 10 Euros for daytrippers and extending its duration. The fee applies to visitors without an overnight stay during peak periods, primarily on weekends and during a designated window in April-May. Overnight guests are exempt, and advanced bookings can reduce the fee by half. This initiative aims to manage tourist flow, particularly during busy seasons, to preserve the city's unique character and mitigate the overwhelming impact of tourism.
"The pilot project [of 2024] worked," Simone Venturini, the city's tourism councilor, told CNN at the BIT tourism fair in Milan. "The aim remains the same: create a new system to manage tourist flow and disincentivize daytripper tourism in several periods, in line with the delicate and unique nature of the city, to guarantee the respect that it merits."
Guests staying overnight in the city won't pay this fee and daytrippers can cut the fee in half by booking their visit four or more days in advance.
