More than 18 million American workers identified as digital nomads in 2024, a 147 percent increase since 2019. Spain ranks highest for digital nomads due to visa benefits, including a one-year visa convertible into three, third-place tech and innovation standing, and relatively low visa costs. Europe houses nine of the top ten destinations, with the Netherlands, Norway, and Estonia also ranking highly. Romania, Malta, Portugal, and Canada follow among top spots. Three jurisdictions grant direct citizenship for nomad residency and fifteen offer pathways to permanent residency, enabling eventual citizenship and improved international mobility.
