Havering Council is set to recommend the closure of three libraries—Harold Wood, South Hornchurch, and Gidea Park—due to financial constraints, estimating savings of £288,000 a year. This decision comes as a response to decreasing government funding and increasing social care and homelessness pressures. The libraries, which experience the lowest footfall, also require significant investment. While the council explores enhanced community services to mitigate the impact, they unfortunately acknowledge that no viable financial alternatives can fully compensate for the necessary savings.
Cllr Morgon stated that the closures are due to ongoing financial challenges faced by the council, emphasizing cuts in Government funding and heightened demands in social services.
The council aims to save £288,000 annually with the library closures as they seek to maintain essential statutory services amidst rising costs related to social care and homelessness.
