UNICEF Photos of the Year show global plight of children DW 01/30/2025
Briefly

UNICEF Germany has recognized impactful documentary photography for the 25th time, emphasizing its importance in raising awareness about children's living conditions worldwide. This year, a unique decision saw two photographers awarded first place—the Israeli Avishag Shaar-Yashuv for her portrayal of an Israeli child affected by violence, and Palestinian Samar Abu Elouf for capturing the trauma of children in Gaza. Both prize-winning reportages shed light on the harsh realities faced by children in conflict zones, reflecting the pain and dignity present amidst their suffering. This initiative seeks to encourage empathy and understanding through visual storytelling.
The Jury of the UNICEF Photo of the Year, acutely aware of the very different numbers of victims in Israel and Gaza, did not presume to establish a ranking of suffering.
Each year, the winning photos from the UNICEF photo contest do exactly that: they open our eyes to the predicaments of children all around the world.
Dareen, 11, and 5-year-old Kinan are finally safe in a hospital in Qatar. Their entire family was killed in an Israeli bombing raid.
Avishag Shaar-Yashuv portrayed the boy and other children in an emergency shelter after their homes were ravaged. She was awarded first place for her haunting photo reportage.
