The United States has imposed sanctions on Sudan's army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, accusing him of war crimes and choosing conflict over negotiations to end the violence.
Washington's sanctions also target the supply of weapons to the Sudanese army, freezing assets and barring American dealings with those involved in the arms supply.
Burhan reacted defiantly to the prospect of sanctions, stating, 'We welcome any sanctions for serving this country,' reflecting his stance amidst ongoing conflict.
The war that erupted in April 2023 has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and has thrust half of Sudan's population into hunger.
