A federal judge, Amit Mehta, has ruled that notable figures involved in the January 6 Capitol riot are prohibited from entering Washington, DC without court approval. This decision follows President Trump's widely criticized pardons for over 1,500 individuals connected to the attack, which aimed to overturn the 2020 election results. High-profile defendants like Stewart Rhodes, leader of the Oath Keepers, faced altered sentences but not full pardons. The order emphasizes judicial oversight even as former President Trump aligns himself with these defendants' claims of election fraud.
The decision comes after President Donald Trump made the controversial decision to pardon nearly all of the 1,583 people who faced federal charges for their participation in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
Commutations do not exonerate but rather lower the punishments a defendant may face. Trump announced the commutations and pardons on Monday, in the first hours of his second term.
