President Trump’s suspension of development aid has halted US-funded projects in approximately 130 countries, significantly impacting humanitarian efforts. He criticized USAID, alleging waste and mismanagement without evidence. This move has incited backlash from opposition leaders who argue it undermines global humanitarian efforts, particularly in the context of escalating US-China competition in aid. With China investing heavily in countries like Bangladesh, US aid plays a crucial role not just in development but also in countering China's influence. The ongoing debates underline the complexities of international aid and its impact on geopolitical strategies.
On February 6, Trump wrote on his 'Truth Social' platform 'Looks like billions of dollars have been stolen at USAID.' He did not provide any evidence.
'This is not about charity,' said Andy Kim, Democratic US Senator for New Jersey. 'This is about us in this very dangerous global environment right now.'
USAID is one of our best tools for countering financial and economic influence from China,' he added, emphasizing the role of US aid in global politics.
The US has granted Bangladesh $393 million in aid for 2024 alone, while China has financed 138 development projects in the country worth $21 billion.
