Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has filed a lawsuit against Saudi agribusiness Fondomonte Arizona, alleging that its extensive groundwater pumping has severely impacted rural communities' health and infrastructure.
In recent years, foreign companies have been drawn to Arizona's unregulated groundwater access, leading to significant depletion of local aquifers, as illustrated by Fondomonte's practices since 2014.
Fondomonte, responding to the lawsuit, argues that the allegations are unfounded, claiming it employs conservation technology and adheres to all state regulations in its farming operations.
The ongoing drought in the West has increased competition for water resources, with Arizona heavily reliant on dwindling supplies from the Colorado River, making groundwater even more crucial.
