Why Germany, India face obstacles to closer strategic ties DW 01/11/2026
"India's strengths are primarily in the services sector,"
"India serves as the office of the global economy. China, on the other hand, is more like the factory of the global economy."
"It began with the call centers. Now it is the research facilities. Many large German companies have outsourced their research institutes to India. And the Indian students who come to us mostly do degrees in science and engineering."
Top German politicians are prioritizing visits to India as economic and geopolitical opportunities grow. India’s population stands near 1.45 billion and the OECD projects Indian economic growth will outpace China this year. Germany has endured nearly three years of recession and is actively recruiting skilled workers from India while Indian students form the largest foreign student group at German universities. India’s comparative advantage lies in services, call centers, and expanding research facilities, prompting German companies to outsource research there. Bilateral trade reached €29 billion in 2024, still far below Germany’s €246 billion trade volume with China.
