Southwest Airlines stated that beginning on December 4, flight attendants will start preparing the cabin for landing at 18,000 feet instead of the previous 10,000 feet. This procedural adjustment aims to enhance safety by addressing the risks associated with in-flight turbulence, which has contributed to numerous passenger injuries over the years.
The National Transportation Safety Board noted that turbulence-related incidents accounted for over one-third of all airline occurrences in the U.S. from 2009 to 2018, resulting in serious injuries despite the rarity of fatalities.
