X is moving closer to removing the block functionality, which it's been exploring for over a year, ever since platform owner Elon Musk discovered that he's one of the most blocked people in the app. According to Musk, 'giant block lists' are a significant concern, and he believes that blocking is largely ineffective since users can circumvent the restriction by logging in with different accounts to access content.
X's new feature will allow blocked accounts to see your public posts but will prevent them from engaging with your content via likes, replies, or reposts. This change is meant to provide transparency, as it will allow users to know if already blocked individuals attempt to engage with their posts.
While users can still protect privacy by switching to 'Protected Posts,' which limits visibility to approved followers, X's approach seems to undervalue the various essential uses of the blocking function. Blocking is traditionally a critical means of protection for users, allowing them to manage their interactions on the platform.
