A Historic San Francisco Theater Might Finally Be Redeveloped Into Housing | KQED
Briefly

The Alexandria Theater in San Francisco's Richmond District, closed since 2004, is set for redevelopment into family apartments. City officials approved plans that aim to maintain the building's historic charm, including its marquee and murals. Local leaders emphasize thoughtful housing development that respects the community's character while accommodating growth. Preservationists argue the theater's unique Egyptian revival architecture should remain intact, blending new housing with the Richmond District's historical context, ultimately enhancing the neighborhood's appeal without erasing its heritage.
"The Alexandria Theater is a great example - it really needs to have a new use and it can be for housing, so here we are," she said to KQED.
"It was created with this unique Egyptian revival style that was very much of the '20s and because it had all these very attractive design elements, we'd like to see that preserved and kept for any new project," he said.
