Guadalupe Macias has operated Don Rafa's Cyclery for nearly two decades, noticing a recent uptick in police presence since the arrival of the SFPD mobile command unit at the local BART plaza. Despite this, she observes persistent issues with cleanliness and the unhoused population in the area, causing disturbances to her business. Macias's experiences reflect broader community challenges, as trash quickly accumulates after initial cleanings, and she frequently encounters individuals with mental health issues near her shop. Community meetings are addressing these local concerns.
In front of the bike shop, she sees human feces on the sidewalk 'all the time' and she cleans them with water twice a week.
The police presence helped 'just a little,' Macias said, but trash on the plazas still comes and goes.
