Mission's 168-unit 'Casa Adelante' affordable housing breaks ground with music, dancing, and a lot of shovels
Briefly

On April 16, 2025, a groundbreaking ceremony for the Casa Adelante affordable housing complex took place at 1515 South Van Ness Ave, commemorated by various city officials and activists. After nearly a decade of protests against a prior market-rate proposal, this 168-unit project will prioritize housing for the homeless, individuals living with HIV, and provide commercial spaces for local services. Mayor Lurie emphasized the transformative potential of community-driven affordable housing and called for continued collaboration among city departments to advance housing development.
Casa Adelante, which will rise nine stories, will reserve 42 units for formerly homeless families, five units for people living with HIV and two ground-floor commercial retail spaces.
Getting to today's groundbreaking ceremony took years of organizing and protests against what was originally a 138-unit market-rate complex that developer Lennar had planned for the site.
Affordable housing built with community transforms lives, said Mayor Daniel Lurie, standing in front of about 50 participants.
Lurie highlighted the cooperation between the two project developers - the Mission Economic Development Agency and Chinatown Community Development Center - in moving the project forward.
