San Jose's advocates are urging city leaders to create a dedicated funding source for addressing the significant maintenance backlog in parks, particularly in East San Jose. The City Council is considering a parcel tax proposal for the 2026 ballot aimed at generating around $21 million annually for park infrastructure. Despite previous hesitations about tax measures, a fresh campaign is planned to engage residents on this issue. Councilmember Peter Ortiz emphasized the need for equitable access to clean and safe parks across all neighborhoods and demographics, advocating for community engagement to garner support.
This proposal isn't just esoteric somewhere else in the city. This is meant for all of us, right? For the whole city and hopefully in seeing that value, it improves results and polls.
The activists and I truly believe regardless of your ZIP code, the color of your skin, you deserve access to a clean and safe open space in your very own neighborhood.
