Volkanovski had not fought since the previous encounter while Lopes returned after finishing Jean Silva to earn another shot. Both fighters showed respect in the build-up and started cautiously, touching gloves and trading light strikes. Volkanovski frequently changed stances, tested takedowns, and used leg and body kicks. Lopes stayed upright on takedown attempts, landed effective body shots and a late right hand. Early exchanges landed but caused little decisive damage, keeping the contest close.
