Duolingo is changing its approach to user motivation by replacing its hearts system with an 'energy' mechanic. The previous system penalized users for mistakes by deducting hearts, while the new energy system encourages learning by allowing users to complete lessons without harsh penalties. Mistakes will now cost one unit of energy, which replenishes over time, promoting a focus on correct answers instead. This transition aims to gamify learning further and has shown positive user engagement in early data trials, according to Duolingo staff.
"We feel like this is a way that we can motivate you to focus on things you're getting right rather than penalizing for the things that you're making mistakes on," Wayne says.
Under the hearts system, you could fail out of your first lesson of the day. In an energy world, that's really not going to happen because we're not penalizing mistakes anymore.
