The Pixel 10 lineup — Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold — will be the first phones to enable WhatsApp voice and video calls over a satellite network. The satellite calling feature activates on August 28. Use of the feature requires service on a participating carrier and carriers may impose additional charges. Carrier-specific details and availability will be provided in the days leading up to the launch. An official Made by Google post highlights the off-grid calling capability. The phones are listed as 5G-capable models. This expands emergency and remote communication options for users outside traditional cell coverage.
Google unveiled the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold a couple of days ago, but it seemingly forgot to announce a first-ever feature, which it only got to today. Namely, that these phones will be the first to offer support for placing WhatsApp voice and video calls via satellite connectivity.
This feature was announced today, and it will start working on August 28, as you can see in the X post below. #Pixel10 has you covered on and off the grid 📍 Pixel devices will be the first to offer voice and video calls on @WhatsApp over a satellite network starting 8/28¹ 🌍 pic.twitter.com/6yDSDMskkK- Made by Google (@madebygoogle) August 22, 2025
Obviously, there is some fine print - you will need to be on a participating carrier, which may charge you extra to use this function. Undoubtedly, more information will be forthcoming from carriers in the next few days as we approach the release date.
