Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing has achieved a remarkable milestone, shipping 20 billion image sensors since its inception in the 1980s, driven primarily by the proliferation of mobile devices.
The rapid increase in shipments, doubling from 10 to 20 billion in just five years, reflects the rising number of cameras in smartphones, moving from dual to four-camera setups.
President Yoshihiro Yamaguchi emphasized the significance of mobile devices in achieving this impressive shipment figure, noting that technological advancements have allowed for the integration of multiple cameras in smartphones.
In addition to mobile applications, Sony's semiconductor division is diversifying its market, seeking to supply sensors for in-vehicle technology, smart factories, and data centers, among other sectors.
